1.2 (SSBIV Engine) *recommended

The final pre-alpha version, completed February 2025. It’s basically 1.1 but ported into the new “SSBIV Engine”, with a balance patch. As FKD and The Shaggy39 Studio make this the foundation for a full release, some features unfortunately had to be removed, but can still be played in other versions. Click here for the full changelog compared to 1.0.1, which also loads in-game when opening this version.

1.1 (LIU Showcase 2024)

Sportsball as it appeared in May 2024, though it has the same base content as 1.2. As The Shaggy39 Studio went to developing the “SSBIV Engine” right after, this build was delayed for almost a year, but was released at the same time as 1.2 for archival purposes. It can only be played with 2 players, and the settings don’t work :)

1.0 (LIU Showcase 2023)

The “classic” version, completed June 2023. Features that 1.2 lacks include: the single-player Arcade mode and Omega Square boss, an interactive tutorial, training mode, and more customizable settings, like match point and stage hazards. Character movesets, win screens, and UI are also different, although you can only attack people by hitting the ball. The 1.0.1 version has a fun trailer you can view here, and includes a separate installer that 1.0.0 lacks. It also has some old devlogs for the controls.

0.5 (Early Demo)

Also called the “meme” build or “Pre-Release Milestone 1”, this is the earliest incarnation of Sportsball, completed in December 2022. It’s clearly an unfinished mess, but we’re still fond of it, and you can play it if you’re brave enough. It includes cut content and copyrighted audio, including the origins of Square’s noises (he’s a Squidward YTP lmao).

*All these builds are pre-alpha prototypes, or “college” builds created mainly as thesis projects. Future builds for Sportsball will reset the build number back to zero, and will release starting at 1.0 on Steam.
